UPDATE: I called a friend who is into tech stuff and asked him if he had a cable modem lying around that he wasn’t using. Turns out he had a Motorola Surfboard that he had bought from a neighbor for $35. I hooked it up, called Time Warner with the Mac ID, and I’m hanging ten once again at a savings that will pay for itself in just 4 months of rental fees. Thanks again to all those who replied.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

We had a big storm last night (and more on the way), and I think the lightning fried my cable modem. (There was one lightning hit that popped the GFCI outlet in the kitchen, though it’s not on the same breaker as the computer.) The modem in question (not the one illustrated) is the one supplied by my good friends at Time Warner, and I’ve been paying a rental fee for years for the privilege of having it sit under my desk. I want to buy one and tell TW to shove their rental fee up their Ethernet port. Any suggestions on a modem?

Motorola Surfboard SB6141. I picked one up on CL for 20 bucks a while back. It’s cheap, DOCSIS 3 and highly rated.

Coming from you, that’s a high recommendation.

The cable company will have a list of approved devices. I bought mine on Ebay (for Comcast — Ew! ) for around $60, as I recall. DOCSIS 3.0 and might be the same model Nibbles recommends. Bear in mind that if lightning did fry the other modem, they are required to send you another one. You might want to buy a genuine surge suppressor, or even a small UPS, to protect your investment, since there’s lightning in Texas. (We don’t have lightning in California.) Do you have your Mac on a surge suppressor?

Mac is on a suppressor, but it is very old. Don’t those things wear out over time? I don’t know if the modem is plugged to the suppressor though. In fact, I’m not sure what is plugged where. Good call on the list. I need to call TW and have them ping the modem, though the automated phone call says I need to reset it, and I have cycled the power numerous times.

Motorola Surfboard, definitely. I paid $5-$7/month for YEARS until one day I just walked into the physical location to complain about slow speeds. They handed me a Surfboard for FREE, no rental, and said the phone reps didn’t have access to that service. I’ve always been told to just walk into your local office whenever possible, now I totally believe it. FWIW, this was with Charter Communications around the time of their new CEO and turnaround plan, so I think everyone's Give-A-Damn was temporarily busted. Customer retention was key.

I just need to comment on all the technology in that picture.

I'm reminded of the tech in WarGames. Phone modem, floppy disks, etc. Cutting edge in 1983.

Any Motorola Surfboard will do as long as its DOCSIS 3.

Been using them for years. I think out of the 20 or so i have installed/recommended for friends and family maybe 1 has had to be replaced after 5+ years.

Another recommendation for that modem. Sounds like a winner. Thanks.

As for set up, are they pretty much plug-and-play?

Yea, I was going to recommend the Surfboard, too.
